Julia becomes North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner

Responsibility for governance and oversight of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has transferred to the elected North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

The Statutory Instrument, the formal order from the Home Secretary, came into force at midnight with the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner replacing the work of the North Yorkshire Fire Authority.

Julia Mulligan, currently Police and Crime Commissioner, becomes North Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

She said:

“We have incredibly hardworking firefighters and staff in North Yorkshire. I have met with many of them in recent weeks and will continue to do that now the transfer of governance has taken place.

“An independent report on the current situation within the Fire Service has been commissioned and this will publish its findings shortly. I will outline my plans and vision for the future of the organisation following this and ahead of the first meeting of the Police, Fire and Crime Panel in early December.”
