17 February 2014 – FOI Response: 925.2013-14 – Freedom of information request

Request

Would it be possible to analyse the type of crimes committed by number of offenders?

Response

Extent and Result of Searches

Searches were carried out within the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. The information you have requested is not, strictly speaking, held by the Commissioner – but it is held by North Yorkshire Police and I have therefore answered your request in a way which reflects the information held by the Force. I trust that this is acceptable.

Decision

The response to your previous FOI request provided you with figures showing arrivals into custody at Northallerton Police Station for the last 12 months, including voluntary attendees. I also provided you with the recorded Home Office offence categories for those attendees. I have interpreted your current request as meaning the number of arrivals into custody for each recorded Home Office offence category, for the last 12 months.

These figures are as follows:

Arson & Criminal Damage 204
Burglary 138
Drug offences 90
Fraud 21
Miscellaneous crimes against society 34
Possession of weapons 12
Public Order Offences 91
Robbery 18
Sexual offences 74
Sexual offences 74
Thefts 256
Vehicle Offences 65
Violence against the person 520

For some of the arrivals into custody there is no recorded Home Office offence category. This could be for one of the following reasons:

  • An arrest was made where the incident was initially dealt with as a crime, but subsequent information suggests no crime has taken place and so the incident is recorded as a “no crime”.
  • No Home Office offence category would be recorded for arrests made for non-notifiable offences, for example, driving under the influence of alcohol.
  • No Home Office offence category would be recorded for arrests made under the Mental Health Act (where a person is conveyed to a place of safety).

Please note that it should not be taken that the information relating to Northallerton Police station will be similar to that for any other operational police station, or for that matter the proposed custody suite at South Kilvington.
